The base or rootstock cactus is typically chosen for its strong root system and ability to provide stability and support to the grafted top portion. The scion is the top part of the grafted cactus, selected for its unique characteristics such as colorful flowers or interesting growth habits. It is usually smaller and grafted onto the rootstock. This is usually done by carefully cutting both the scion and rootstock and then attaching them - the two cactus parts must be in close contact for successful grafting.
Over time, the two cactus pieces heal and grow together, forming a single plant.
